Nearly every English-language guide to Indonesian type approval repeats the same claim: your certificate is valid for three years. Several go further and tell you it can be renewed once, for another three. Both statements are wrong, and the error has been copied between testing laboratories, consultancies and manufacturer compliance teams for close to two decades.
What the regulation actually says
Ministerial Regulation 3 of 2024 governs certification of telecommunications equipment in Indonesia. It replaced Ministerial Regulation 16 of 2018, which is still widely cited abroad. Under the current rule the certificate is issued without an expiry date.
A separate three-year period does exist, and it attaches to conduct rather than to the document. For three years from issuance, the certificate holder may manufacture, assemble or import that device for trade or use in Indonesia. When that window closes, the certificate does not become void — but the holder may no longer bring further units into the country under it.
Why the distinction matters commercially
| If you believe… | You will… | What actually applies |
|---|---|---|
| The certificate expires | Budget for a renewal that does not exist as a procedure | You file a fresh application, treated on its own merits |
| Renewal is automatic if the product is unchanged | Leave it until the last month | Nothing is automatic; lab availability and queue slots govern the timing |
| Stock in the channel becomes illegal | Panic-clear inventory | Units already lawfully placed on the market are not retroactively affected |
The practical consequence is the opposite of what most manufacturers prepare for. There is no expiry notice to wait for, because nothing expires. The date that matters is one you have to track yourself.
What the certificate register shows
We maintain a complete snapshot of the public certificate register published by Indonesia’s Directorate General — 115,687 certificates issued between January 2006 and August 2026.
- In 105,760 of those records, the interval between the issue date and the stated end date is exactly three years to the day.
- Among the 500 most recent certificates, 495 sit at exactly 3.00 years. The remaining five are isolated anomalies, not a second rule.
So the three-year figure is not folklore. It is genuinely stamped on almost every certificate. What has been lost in translation is what that date governs.
Where the error came from
The Indonesian government’s own postel.go.id still hosts a press release from February 2008 stating that certificates are valid for three years and must be renewed. It cites Government Regulation 52 of 2000. That page looks official, ranks well, and is quoted freely — but it describes a regime that no longer governs certification. Ministerial Regulation 3 of 2024 does.
If you are reading a guide that also mentions company registration documents called TDP or an import licence called NPIK, you are reading something written against rules that have since been replaced.
What to do about it
Track the three-year date per certificate, not per product. A manufacturer with twelve certified models has twelve separate windows, and they rarely fall conveniently together. If you intend to keep supplying the Indonesian market past that date, the new application needs to be under way well before it — the constraint is laboratory scheduling and application queues, not the paperwork itself.
Methodology
Figures above are drawn from a full snapshot of the public certificate register taken on 1 August 2026, covering 115,687 certificates issued from 12 January 2006 onward. Intervals were computed from the issue and end dates recorded on each certificate. The register is published by the Indonesian authority; we reproduce aggregate statistics only, not individual records. Regulatory statements are taken from Ministerial Regulation 3 of 2024 as published in the Ministry’s legal documentation system.
Questions we are asked
Can the certificate be renewed?+
There is no renewal mechanism in the regulation, because there is nothing to renew. If you intend to keep importing after the window closes, you file again. Treat it as a new application in your planning and your budget.
Does the three-year window restart if we change the product?+
A changed product is generally a different filing question altogether — a certificate is tied to a specific brand and type. Material changes usually mean a new certificate rather than a continuation of the old one.
Our certificate is from 2019 and we are still selling. Are we exposed?+
Selling existing stock and importing new units are different acts. The question to answer is whether anything has entered Indonesia under that certificate after its window closed. That is a factual review, and it is worth doing before an inspection does it for you.
